Woke up to a strange smell and the sound of people screaming in the street. It took me a minute (probably longer than it should have) to put the pieces together, then, suddenly, I made the connection. FIRE! Somewhere there's a fire!
I was up like a shot, terrified it was my house and I would have to mad dash it for the exit. A glance out the window showed it was not the case, as flames poured out of the next door neighbor's second floor window, the glass shattering from the heat. I called 911, then rushed through my house checking the walls for warm spots, any sign of the fire jumping the 30 foot gap between the houses. Within moments the fire department arrived and started battling the blaze. I'm watching them now as they finish checking for hot spots and hidden remains of the fire. Fortunately my house is safe. Unfortunately theirs is a total loss.

I had something like this happen a number of years back. I lived in the apartment above an old lady who fell asleep while smoking. There's not a lot of things more fun than helping people from the third story climb down balconies to get to the ground.
